How we verify halal status

Short version: a listing appearing on HalalHooks means it is described as halal. It does not mean we have called the kitchen. Of 3,287 published listings, 0 currently carry a halal status with a named source. We show you which is which, on every listing.

Where listings come from

Most listings are compiled from public business data — the same records that power map searches. A business enters our database when it is categorised as halal, or when its own name says so. That is a reasonable signal for finding places. It is not evidence about how the meat is sourced, whether the fryer is shared, or whether anything changed after a new owner took over.

What each status means

Certified halal

A certifying body has issued a certificate for the business, and we have seen it or a published record of it.

Muslim-owned

The owners identify the business as Muslim-owned. Useful context, though it is a statement about ownership rather than about a certificate.

Has a halal menu

The business serves halal items but is not wholly halal — worth knowing if a shared fryer or an alcohol licence matters to you.

Self-reported halal

The business says it is halal and we have recorded who told us and when, without independent confirmation.

Every listing that carries one of these also names where the claim came from and when it was last checked. A status without a source is not something we publish.

What a listing without a status means

It means we have not checked it yet, and we say exactly that on the page rather than leaving you to assume. These listings are still useful — the address and phone number are real, and the business is described as halal somewhere — but the confirming call is yours to make until we have made it. We would rather show you an unverified listing labelled honestly than hide it or dress it up.

Getting it wrong

A wrong halal claim is not a small error, and we treat a correction as more urgent than a new listing. If something here is wrong — a place closed, a status is stale, a business never was halal — tell us and we will change or remove it. Owners can have their own listing corrected the same way.
